  6. Ann Caunce, who features under CV section, was one of my friends until they went to Canada. I remember them going and missed them. Their old dog died just before they went. I recall going to their house on christmas day proudly bearing my new walkie talkie doll, Mrs Caunce asked me to let Susan hold it, she took it outside, fell over the kerb and smashed the dolls face!
Ann sent me some corn with instructions how to pop it, we had never had anything like this before. and some pink pyjamas which were very stylish! if you read this Ann. send me a message.

  10. Just discovered this site, I am a member of the PURDIE family, you have spelt the name wrong. We lived in Tysley Grove, in fact I was born in one of the prefabs. Bill, Mary and Peter (deceased) all live in Barnoldswick, there is another brother, Jock lives somewhere near Skipton. My Dad worked at Rolls Royce Barnoldswick. We all went to school at Salterforth and then on to Barnoldswick secondary. I used to go tap dancing up Waterstone road. and was also in the St Johns Ambulance in Earby. I have lots of memories about childhood so was pleased to find this site. By the way (Jean) Purdie is spelt GENE that's me!

  13. Afriend came across my name in a record from Sue (nee Calvert)...talking about life at New Road School in the 50's...Yes, I too have very fond and vivid memories from those innocent times, and remember all the names on your list. At the time, my parents owned the bakery at 21 Victoria Road. When I was 10, they bought a 'chippy' in Skipton so we left Earby. I continued at New Road travelling daily on the bus, then went to Keighley Tech at age 11.
Studied to be a teacher and re-visited Earby for a 2 week teachig practice in 1967...the school had then moved to Alder Hill, but it was very strange teaching along with Miss Duxbury, Mr Morton and Mr Cross (then the newly appointed headmaster!)
Taught in Keighley for many, many now retired and living in Farnhill.
(Yes I do remember you Susan...seem to think you left New Road before me??)

  22. Hi All
I am doing a history dissertation at the University of Central Lancashire; my subject is the history of Northolme 1939 to 1979. I am looking for old photos of the ranch and its people, Do you have old memories tucked away in a box, would you be prepared to let myself and Earby Historical society scan them. Also looking to interview people who lived in the prefabs or worked in the egg packing, plus any memories you would like to share. I am looking for any women that moved with the war effort to the ranch from Barnsley or south Yorkshire. If you can help in any way please contact me at or post on this site or via the historical society.
    Thank you

    E-mail address:
Comments: My brother Brian sent me the link to the website - the 5th page in of photographs - the ? before Sheila Pawson is me! Anne Pawson i also think the blond boy in the cowboy hat is my brother Stuart and it's very likely the one holding the rabbit is Brian. I recall we had a black and white rabbit when we lived at 44 Kenilworth Drive. This picture must have been summer of '59 because mum got polio when I was 2 and a half and was in hospital/nursing home for a very long time after. We moved across the road to 51 when I was 5
Hate to say it but I don't have many fond memories of the place - I was a bit young for the heyday of all the parties. All I recall was constantly being beaten up by the sisters of boys my brother (Stuart)fell out with!!

  30. 7/6/2012 just met Cliff and Anne Stocker in Jesters, talked about Kenny and The Ranch, found it riveting stuff!! I can remember so many people from that period 1947-48 onwards. We lived at 45 Warwick Drive next to to Ted Hunt and his wife on one side and the Brooks' family on the other. Names that ring a bell? Tony Crooks,Beryl Abbott, Sylvia Wormwell, Barry Goacher, the Buchanan family to name just a few.

  31. I lived on the Ranch from 1980 as a 3 year old until 1998 when i flew the nest. My memories there will never be matched, in particular reference to 'tuthersiders' ha, we used to compete against the 'otherside' as we put it in many ways, we played them at football on the front park and we played them at hare and hounds where the entire Ranch was the boundary ( the Ranch hill was out of bounds ha ha ) they were amazing games very competetive and often ended in a punch up or a fall out, all forgotten the following day because we were Ranchers.

  38. Hi Ken,
I am writing this on November 18, 2011. We are having our first real snow of the winter. It will stay now until the end of March. It's like cotton wool falling. My husband Peter doesn't think it is so pretty as before long he will be out with our snowblower.

I retired for a year, did some travelling, then was called back into work to help out. That was 3 years ago. I am working part-time, still connected to The University of Winnipeg. I am working for the U of Winnipeg Foundation. We raise all the money for The University. Peter is well, my son Adam and family are doing well, and my grandchildren, Dorian age 13, James age 12 and Jocelyn age 6 are thriving. All the best.

    Marlene Laycock.

  40. Its a while since I visited this site however it still sends the shivers down my spine, the innocent days of long ago, but memories are not forgotten.
Some people from my childhood are still living on the "Ranch" but and isn't it fantastic how the people from this wonderful background have spread to all corners of the world.
When I think back it brings a tear to my eyes to have known so many special people. For those who are trying to remember, I lived at 29 Warwick Drive from 1956 to 1976 with Mum & Dad, now at (Reeval Close) brother Kevin (Adelaide South Australia) and sister Lynda (Barnoldswick)
I now live in Adelaide, came here in 1989 and have been back twice and will be back next year after the Olympics.
Feel free to contact me on my email it would be great to hear from any old friends.
    Bye for now!!

  43. Hello All,

I am most pleased to stumble over such a fantastic website!

My name is Ron Elliott and I lived in Barnoldswick from 1945 to 1998 and I am looking to hopefully find some old friends, neighbours and work colleges of Rolls Royce in Barnoldswick.

I was married to Shelia Scott/Elliott in 1949, and had a son, David Elliott in 1951 who also grew up in Barnoldswick and was an apprentice at Rolls Royce. I moved to Lowestoft, Suffolk in 1998.

Anyone out there who knows anything of myself or my family, please get in touch on as it would be great to catch up!

    Best Regards,
    Ron Elliott

  44. We only lived in Earby for a short time, first in Victoria Road and then on to Wentcliffe Drive...doesn't it sound posh? But I remember those days in the early 50's like it was yesterday....

Clara's Wood Hut,my fist film at the Empire, Mrs Clements/Mr Clare/ Miss Duxbury from New Rd School, the smell of the cotton mills, Aurthur Lee's fruit shop/ Hazel Procter, Margaret Vipond, Colin Wormwell and Colin Wiggin from school...wonder whatever happened to them all?

Really fond memories of an age of innocence, where we were free to roam and be kids. No money, but who cared?

God bless all those that remember those golden years.

from one of the many Calvert kids..

  50. Our family moved to John Street, Earby in 1953 from Dewsbury. There was my father Albert, my twin brothers, Colin and Robin and sister Audrey. I worked at Bristol Tractors in the drawing office until I joined the RAF for national service in 1956. When I returned from Malta in 1958 they had all moved to 69 Kenilworth Drive, next door to Charlie Goacher and his family. I eventually moved away and married. We have five children, (more twins) and 18 Grandchildren (also including twins) and they say they skip a generation.
My dad moved to Cornwall for a few years but later came back to Barlick, and died in 1979.
Robin lives in Barlick and Colin is still in Earby.
    Audrey is in Brierfield.
My wife and I, with our youngsters moved to Bradford in 1969 and have been here ever since.

  55. Hi,I enjoyed your site very much and had a trip down memory lane.In approx' 1958,my family moved from Salcombe in Devon to No 76 Salterforth Rd.I was 3 years old at the time.I can remember a small stream at the front of the property and a hawthorn bush.Mr and Mrs Mc'grath lived next door.I remember the rag and bone man and the pop man.
My Mother used to clean the library once a week(next to Dales farm egg packing station) and my father helped to run the youth club.
I also remember all the garages at the back of Salterforth road and playing 'Hide and Seek' around them.We also had a big 50 gallon drum and used to roll along the dirt track behind the garages, making ourselves sick.
There used to be a couple of garages to the east of the ranch, which was like a land fill site and a tall wire fence which seperated the field from it,As kids we had a myth, that all the stream area was sinking sand and we must never go near it or we will get sucked down.
I can remember Yates shop at the bottom of the hill and going to it with my fourpence pocket money for lollys and 'spice'
I have on 2 occasions been down the hill on my 'bogey' and once hit the tree at the bottom near the shop and hurt myself badly.
    My parents -Walter Thornton-died
Mary Thornton-Mother-now 92 lives in Barnolswick
John Thornton -Eldest. lives in Hereford
    Wendy Edwards-lives in Prestwich
    Jackie Emerson-lives near Halifax
    Ray Thornton (self)lives in Cowling
My Grandfather was a stone mason who lived in Earby and made the Coronation scroll on the library and the stone balls on the old police station. Thanks Ray

  67. I have been reading this guestbook and Web site for some time and getting a great deal of pleasure and comfort from remembering old memories, and past good times. I was moved to actually write something when I read about what happened to the memorial flowers for Steve Marshall's Mum and Dad. I was so sad to read this happened Steve. I remember your parents a little, and was good friends with your sister Sandra for a couple of years when we were both at Barlick Modern. (Terrible school--bad, bad, teaching standards.) I do remember evenings playing Monoply at your house with your parents. I have a twin brother (Alan)who may also have come over to your house? (We were born in 1956.) Your Mum had such a warm and infectious laugh, and it was obvious your parents loved each other very deeply. I was very shocked to hear about their tragic motor cycle accident, at the time in 1974. I am sure you are right that they are still there in spirit--probably swearing at the nasty person(s) who took the flowers. My Dad remembers your family Steve. Didn't you have a younger brother?

Unfortunately, my Mum Alice died just a year later in 1975, so that time period is a little bit of a blur for me. I do regularly go back and visit my Dad (George), who still lives at 4 Kenilworth with his "new" wife Margaret of the past twenty years, or so. I now live in California, but will never forget my Yorkshire/Lancashire roots. My older brother Terry (born in '46) lives in New Zealand, and my twin Alan is in Halifax, since recently moving from London and Leeds.

Say hello to Sandra, and I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me.

It was interesting to read about the book by Dr Morrison's son, which Kathleen recently mentioned. I look forward to seeing the movie based on the book--I remember he was one of the few Doctor's who my Mum actually liked. (She couldn't stand Dr Love.) Apparently, Dr Morrison delivered Alan and I, while my Dad and my brother Terry were fishing down at the Leeds/Liverpool Canal. I think that's what father's did in those days, while mothers were at the hospital toiling away!

I am planning to visit my Dad and Margaret in Earby in the next few months (Nov or Feb)....

Anyway, I think that's enough blithering...

    All the best,

  68. I was born at 14 Chesford Avenue in 1944, but only lived there for about two and a half years. My maiden name was Meek and I have a sister Judith who now lives in Hampshire.I don,t have any photographs from those early days, but I remember all the children from school.
I left Earby in 1965 when I married my husband Peter, and I have two daughters and three grandchildren.
Now enjoying retirement,we keep active by walking in the dales and looking after the garden.
Would love to hear from old schoolfriends.
